HUMBOLDT — A gloomy start for Humboldt High put the Lady Cubs in a hole too deep to escape Friday.

Visiting Caney Valley, riding the torrid play of senior Anna Washburn, blitzed its way to a  20-9 lead after one quarter.

Humboldt mounted a furious rally down the stretch, but could not come all the way back in a 47-38 loss.

Washburn poured in 14 of her game-high 27 points in the first quarter as the Bullpups took an 11-point lead.

Humboldt stayed within arm’s length from there. Caney Valley led 28-16 at the break and 42-25 after three.

Kenisyn Hottenstein scored 14 points and Skylar Hottenstein 11 for the Lady Cubs. Shelby Shaughnessy had eight.

Humboldt ended the game on a 15-4 run, but ran out of time.
