CHANUTE — Nine points. That’s all Allen County Community College’s volleyball team had at the end of Wednesday night’s first set.

“Our serve receive was not effective nor was our offense in the first set,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach, following a 25-9, 26-24, 25-21 loss to host Neosho County Community College Wednesday.

“We were hitting directly into blocks resulting in large point runs by Neosho. We never earned points in the first set.”

Allen County played with more purpose in the second set. The Red Devils were up 24-21, receiving the volleyball and needing one point.

They couldn’t get it. Neosho County went on a run to win 26-24.

Coming out of the intermission, the Red Devils played tough again.

“It was point for point but we were still unable to get a run to finish it at the end,” Peters said.

The Red Devils dropped to 13-17 overall. They are 3-5 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play.

“We are going to refocus and revisit our purpose and commitment. We can still earn above a .500 season if we begin to play like the team we were when we started,” Peters said.

Allen County got nine kills from Jordyne Seichepine and eight kills from Alli Jenicke. Jenicke recorded the only solo block of the night. Seichepine, Hayley Mertens, Kaitlyn Speer and Autumn Douglas each had an assisted block.

Jacqui Ortiz was credited with 15 set assists. Sabrina Stanley had eight assists.

Speer and Makhala Giardina each had a service ace.

Jenicke came up with 16 defensive digs and Nicole Reed had 10 digs.

Allen County plays at the Ottawa University triangular Saturday. The Red Devils’ first match is at 3 p.m.

Allen County travels to Northeastern Oklahoma in Miami, Okla., Monday. On Wednesday the Red Devils take on NJCAA Division II top-ranked Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City.
