Jerrik Sigg is on the brink of a special individual season on the football field. Iola High has not had a 1,000-yard rusher in 19 years.
Sigg, a 6-1, 172-pound senior, has 947 yards on 164 carries going into tonight’s 2011 season finale at Prairie View. Sigg is the starting tailback for the IHS Mustangs plus leads the team in all-purpose yardage.
“This is an individual achievement we want to get for Jerrik but also we see it as a team achievement. The guys up front have blocked pretty well this season for Jerrik and they want it for him. It’s a reflection on their hard work also,” said Rick Horton, Mustang head coach.
The Mustangs (1-7) take on Prairie View High’s Buffalos (4-4) at 7 o’clock tonight at LaCygne.
“It would really be great to get over 1,000 yards this season,” Sigg told the Register. “It hasn’t been done for a while. Just like the win against Labette County, I want this for my teammates, the coaches, the school and the community.
“The guys have blocked so well and helped me get this far.”
Sigg moved to the sixth slot on the single-season rushing record. Matt McIntosh has 1,029 yards which was in 1984. The single-season record is 1,286 yards set by Webb Meching in 1992.
Sigg already has the No. 2 and No. 3 single-game record nights on the football field this season. He pushed his older brother John Sigg back to fourth on the list.
Sigg rushed for 239 yards on 26 carries against Parsons, then had a 226-yard game on 30 carries against Labette County. John Sigg rushed for 222 yards on 22 carries against Independence in 2006.
The top single-game performance in IHS football history is 291 yards on 14 carries by quarterback Tyler Ringwald in 2005. It came against Girard.
