Jerrik Sigg and Levi Ashmore were named to the 2011 Kansas Amateur Baseball Association (KABA) All-League team recently. The team was selected by KABA coaches.
The KABA is an American Legion baseball league.
Sigg was named to the first team as an outfielder. Sigg played center field for the Iola American Legion Post 15’s AA Indians. Sigg also garnered second-team honors as a pitcher.
Ashmore was the KABA all-league shortstop.
Iola won the KABA South Division title and took second in the KABA league tournament, losing to Ottawa, which was the North Division champion. Other teams in the KABA are Baldwin, Linn County, Spring Hill, Wellsville, Burlington, Chanute, Fort Scott, Garnett and Osawatomie.
Iola, Ottawa and Baldwin reached the 2011 Kansas American Legion AA State Tournament. The Indians lost out at state but posted one of the best records of the Iola Post 15 baseball history at 36-14.
Iola’s other ace pitcher, Ethan Ericson of Moran, earned second team honors. Catcher Drew Walden was named to the second team as was Ryan Latta at third base.
Receiving honorable mention for Iola were first base man Corey Taylor, second base man Clint Heffern and Dalton Smith of Yates Center as utility player.
Ben Burke of Yates Center played for the Burlington American Legion team. Burke, who drowned in the Neosho River north of Burlington on July 28, earned honorable mention as an outfielder. Burke played for Yates Center High School and graduated in 2010. He had been a high school teammate of Iola American Legion’s Smith and Austin Knoblock.
Iola head coach Mike Taylor received honorable mention.
