The Allen Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams each suffered a loss to the hands of Seward County Community College on Wednesday night.
The Lady Red Devils kicked off the doubleheader with an 88-45 defeat. The blowout marked the third time this season that Allen suffered a loss by more than 40 points.
The Lady Saints put away the Lady Red Devils quickly behind their 56.9 percent shooting performance. Comparatively, Allen shot just 31.9 percent from the floor.
Coach Todd Buchanan’s squad also lost the battle of the boards. Seward grabbed nearly twice as many rebounds (43) as Allen (24).
Wednesday night’s matchup was also the Lady Red Devils’ first conference game of the season. With the loss, Allen drops to 4-7 overall and 0-1 within the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
The men’s team also started its conference slate with a loss as it fell 86-76.
Allen is now 8-3 overall and 0-1 within the KJCCC. The loss snapped the Red Devils’ four-game winning streak.
Like the women’s team, the men failed to prevent Seward from shooting above 50 percent as a whole. Behind a 50.9 percent shooting performance, the Saints were able to eventually pull away in a back-and-forth contest.
In each of the Red Devils’ three losses this season, they have allowed their opponent to shoot at least 50 percent from the floor.
Last year, coach Andy Shaw’s team was ranked 22nd out of 22 teams in points allowed per game (77.8). Before the season, Shaw said improving the defensive unit was one of his main goals.
Although the Red Devils have had their share of good defensive performances this year, they still rank last in the conference by allowing an average of 74.6 points per game. They also rank second-to-last in opponents’ field goal percentage (45.9).
Allen’s next test won’t be much easier as Hutchinson Community College is currently ranked as the third-best shooting team in the KJCCC with a 50.6 percentage from the floor.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will host Hutchinson on Saturday starting with the Lady Red Devils’ game at 2 p.m. followed by the Red Devils at 4 p.m.
