With about two hours of competition remaining Saturday, the call was made to halt the 2010 SEK Swim League Championship meet here in Iola. A thunderstorm was moving in and consistent lightning could be seen in the area.
“We thought maybe we could put it on hold for about 30 minutes or so. As we watched the radar it appeared that the storm would move through fast,” said Luke Bycroft, Iola Recreation director.
But it didn’t so as per SEK league bylaws, the older swimmers — ages 11 to 18 — had to come back to Iola Sunday. Iola batten down the hatches as the storm swept through Saturday night.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, the meet was under way again.
The overall team champions were mentioned in Monday’s meet story in the Register.
Iola’s Emma Piazza tied with Katie Lair of Chanute for the 13-14-year-old girls’ B-Division high point swimmer honors with 59 points. Brytany Stewart of Erie was the A-Division high-point swimmer, 112 points.
Also in 13-14 girls, Jo Lohman, Iola, tied for fourth in the B Division.
Iola’s Della Lohman and Clara Wicoff were 2-3 in the B Division of the 11-12-year old girls. Teammates Micaiah Larney and Elsie Wolf were seventh and eighth. Jordyn Tuck of Erie won the A-Division title.
Autumn Snesrud of Iola placed 10th in the 15-18-year-old girls’ A Division. Erin Duncan of Cherryvale took the A-Division championship.
In B Division, Samantha Bedell of Humboldt was second to Tayita Abudu of Coffeyville. Michelle Britt of Iola was fourth. Humboldt’s Lauren Moore and Emily Durand were ninth and 10th.
For the boys, Iola’s Brandon Donnell placed third in the 11-12-year-old boys’ A Division. Drake Gilmore of Chanute was the division champion.
In B Division, Humboldt’s Hunter Morris was two points away and placed second. Devin Rash of Cherryvale was first. Iola’s Matthew Lea was third and Humboldt’s Cole Cescon was ninth.
Michael Wilson, Iola, was three points out of first place in the 13-14-year-old boys’ A Division. Ben Wright of Coffeyville won the title with 108 points to Wilson’s 105. Trevor Chism of Humboldt was ninth.
Iola’s Blaine Klubek placed third in the B Division. D.J. Cook of Cherryvale took top honors in the division. Humboldt’s Tristan Bruneau was seventh followed by Iola’s Tyler Holloway and Colten Storrer.
Caz Del Chiaro of Fort Scott was the high-point swimmer in the 15-18-year-old boys’ A Division.
Jarrett Mosbrucker, Iola, was the B-Division winner with 99 points. Teammate Jordan Strickler tied for fifth.
