Iola High’s only Southeast Kansas League champion in fall sports was a repeat title holder. Junior Roman Yocham claimed All-SEK honors by winning the 2010 SEK cross country boys’ 5K race in October.
The IHS cross country runners reeled in league honors — four on the boys’ side and two on the girls’ side — at the league meet at Parsons.
SEK coaches named the 2010 All-SEK football and volleyball teams earlier this week. The Iola High Mustangs had three players receive honors while the Iola Fillies had one volleyball player selected.
Junior wide receiver and linebacker Jerrik Sigg was named to the 2010 All-SEK football first-team. The SEK football selections are based on where a school finishes in the standings. Players are not selected by position.
Sigg was Iola’s only first-team selection. The Mustangs were 0-7 in the SEK and 0-9 overall.
League champion Pittsburg and runner-up Independence each had six players chosen for the first team. Chanute and Fort Scott each had four, Columbus had three placed on the first team, Coffeyville and Labette County had two selections while Parsons had one player.
Iola High senior quarterback and safety Charles Apt earned second-team honors for the second straight year. Senior tailback and linebacker Marcus Sullivan received honorable mention.
Iola High junior Kendra Taiclet received second-team All-SEK volleyball honors for the second year in a row. Taiclet, a middle hitter-blocker, led the Fillies in kills with 206, plus had 43 solo blocks and 33 assisted blocks at the net.
Taiclet also had 85 defensive digs and 31 set assists. She was 93 percent at the service line, 242 of 259. The Fillies were 2-6 in SEK play and 8-25 overall.
Named to the 2010 All-SEK volleyball first team were sophomore Mallory Flowers of Chanute, junior Mallory Shelton of Fort Scott, junior Skyler Muff and sophomore Andie Casper, both of Pittsburg, senior Erika Gets of Parsons, sophomore Michaela O’Brien of Labette County and senior Chelsea Mun-dy of Independence.
Joining Taiclet on the second team were Labette County’s junior Shelbie Foister and senior Chelsey Nally, Chanute’s junior Morgan Hudson and Columbus senior Jessica Anderson.
Named to the SEK third team were Chanute’s senior Mackenzey Sutcliffe and freshman Katie Martin, Coffeyville senior Katey Crane, Labette County junior Tiara Ford, Parsons’ seniors Tiana Jones and and Erin Forbes and Independence senior Mi-chelle Knopick.
Yocham defended his SEK cross country title winning the boys’ varsity 5K race in 17 minutes, 27 seconds. Yocham led the Mustangs to a second straight second-place finish in the SEK meet.
Freshman Trent Latta joined Yocham in earning all-SEK honors, finishing ninth in 18:57.
The top 10 finishers claimed all-SEK League honors, while those who placed 11th through 20th were honorable mention.
Junior Christian Kauth and senior Dylan Lower were 17th and 18th, claiming league honorable mention. Kauth ran the distance in 19:34 and Lower came across the finish line in 19:36.
Junior Sydney Owens and senior Leah Weir earned all-SEK honorable mention in leading the Fillies to fourth place as a team at the league cross country meet.
Owens ran the 4K varsity race in 18:45 for 13th place. Weir ended up 19th in 19:23.
For the Mustang football team, Sigg was the team’s leading receiver with 50 catches for 606 yards. Sigg also rushed for 342 yards on 70 carries. He finished tied for 13th on the SEK scoring leaders’ board with seven touchdowns and three two-point conversions for 48 points.
Apt’s season totals were 79 of 204 for 1,099 yards with nine touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. Apt rushed for 482 yards on 72 carries. He was one of the leading tacklers on the team with 33 solo stops, 24 assisted tackles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Sullivan finished the season with 650 yards on 135 carries and 11 touchdowns. He was seventh on the SEK scoring list with 70 points, which included two two-point conversions.
Sullivan became Iola’s second-leading career rusher with 2,262 yards on 501 carries in four years. Webb Mechling (1990-1992) is the IHS leading career rusher with 3,156 yards on 535 carries.
The only two players named to positions are punter and placekicker. Griffin Knopp of Fort Scott was named All-SEK punter and Garrett Webster of Independence was named All-SEK kicker for 2010.
