MORAN — Things went from bad to worse in a hurry for Marmaton Valley High Friday.

Visiting Sedan scored three touchdowns in the game’s first 2½ minutes and never looked back in a 48-0 whitewash.

The lopsided defeat was the third straight to start the 2019 season for Marmaton Valley.

“We knew these first three games were going to be tough,” head coach Garrett Ericson said. “But I never thought it was going to be like this.”

The Blue Devils’ Eli Campbell broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.

Marmaton Valley’s Wes Lowder responded with a nifty kickoff return past midfield, only to have the ball wrenched free as he was being tackled. Sedan’s Eli Campbell scooped up the ball and raced untouched to the end zone.

The Wildcats then went three-and-out, and a muffed snap on the punt attempt set up Sedan at the Marmaton Valley 13.

Sedan’s Dameion Hatten rambled 10 yards on the next play before fumbling into the end zone. Teammate Jared Roggow-Harter was there for the recovery and the touchdown.

The Wildcats found themselves down 22-0 at the 9:23 mark — of the first quarter.

Sedan tacked on two more scores before the end of the quarter before things settled down a bit for Marmaton Valley.

Wildcat quarterback Garrett Henderson found Collin Dudley on a 16-yard pass play to move the ball into Blue Devil territory before the drive stalled.

Marmaton Valley’s Rylan McVey picked off a Sedan pass in the second quarter, offering a brief respite, but the Wildcats’ subsequent drive ended with a fumble.

“We want to control the line of scrimmage and get 4 yards per carry,” Ericson said, “and we haven’t been anywhere close to that yet this year.”

Still, there is a silver lining amid the early season struggles.

Marmaton Valley’s season gets a hard reset next Friday, when the Wildcats open district play by hosting Southern Coffey County.
