Seasons ends for area squads

CHEROKEE — Humboldt High’s volleyball team finished its season Saturday, but not before the Lady Cubs picked up their first Class 3A substate victory in five years.
The Lady Cubs rolled past Riverton in straight sets, 25-8, 25-22, to open substate before dropping a tough match to Jayhawk-Linn, 25-22, 26-24, in the semifinal round.
The loss ends the Lady Cubs’ season with a 25-10 record.
“I am extremely proud of this group of girls,” head coach Stephanie Splechter said.
The loss to Jayhawk-Linn was disappointing, “but the girls should be proud of a successful season,” Splechter said.
Emily Middleton racked up eight kills and three blocks, while Kayle Riebel had 11 points and five aces in the win over Riverton. Anna Setter had eight set assists.
Breanna Kline led the way in the loss to the Jayhawks with four kills and two blocks.
Jayhawk-Linn won the substate championship, defeating Erie in three sets to secure a berth in the Class 3A state tournament Friday and Saturday in Emporia.

ELSEWHERE, Marmaton Valley and Southern Coffey County’s seasons ended at the Class 1A, Division I substate tournament in Lebo.
The Wildcats rolled past Marais des Cygnes Valley, 25-15, 25-22, to open substate play before falling to host Lebo, 25-10, 25-17.
Kaitlin Ensminger led the Wildcats in the win over MdCV with seven points and eight kills. Mackenzie Tynon added five kills. Others earning stats were Kyla Drake, six points, Kaysha Elmenhorst and Misty Storrer, five points each, and Emily Meiwes and Tapanga Turner, both with four kills.
In the loss to Lebo, Meiwes had four points, whil Tynon had four kills and three blocks.
The Lady Titans, meanwhile, fell in the opening round to St. Paul, 25-12, 17-25, 25-16.
Amanda Sherwood paced SCC with six assissts and 13 digs. Breanna Isch had six kills and four blocks. Connie Lyda had 12 digs.
The Lady Titans served at 91 percent clip for the match.
“I was proud of the girls this season,” SCC head coach Jeff True said. “They worked hard throughout the year. We will miss our six seniors next year.”
Top seed Waverly wound up defeating Lebo in three sets in the championship to advance to the state tournament in Hays.
Crest High won its opening match over Elk Valley, 25-18, 27-29, 25-13, in the Class 1A, Divison II substate tournament in Chetopa. But the Lady Lancers’ season ended in the next round to top seed Argonia, 25-7, 25-4. Argonia then defeated Altoona-Midway to win the championship and earn a berth at the state tournament in Hays.

IN CLASS 2A, Yates Center fell to top seed Uniontown, 25-12, 25-12, to end its season. Uniontown dropped the championship match to St. Mary’s Colgan, which advances to the state tournament in Emporia.
