Schedules hold new items

Basketball schedules for Iola High School and the other six area high schools have a few new wrinkles to them for the 2010-2011 season. As does the Allen County Community College schedule.

Since the ACCC basketball teams have already started playing, I tip you off what is different for the Kansas community college basketball teams this season. No Jayhawk Conference Shootout.

That’s right; after all these years of a showcase event where all 19 Kansas community colleges have their men’s and women’s basketball teams featured in one place in three days  of games, it’s gone. For years, the three-day Jayhawk Shootout was hosted by Coffeyville Community College with a corporate sponsor. The sponsor pulled out and no other could be found. The conference dropped the event.

That’s too bad for fans, four-year college coaches and the community college players and coaches in Kansas. The event drew attention from across the nation to the quality of basketball played by Kansas two-year college teams.

IOLA HIGH’S Fillies and Mustangs are playing a little different schedule this year. Gone is the double-round robin play of the Southeast Kansas League. The SEK reverted back to single-round robin play this year and Iola starts league play at the end of January.

That frees up dates from December to January for non-league teams to face the IHS squads. Iola did away with its annual preseason tournament when the SEK went to double-round robin.

So this year, the Iola High teams are in an eight-team tournament, with two pools of four teams, hosted by Anderson County High School. The tournament is Dec. 7, 9, and 10 in Garnett with Baldwin, Burlington, Chanute, Louisburg and Anderson County.

Humboldt High’s teams had played in the Marmaton Valley High preseason tournament. Now, Humboldt is hosting its own — Dec. 7-10 — with Crest, Uniontown and Erie. Marmaton Valley is still hosting a preseason tournament.

Yates Center High has its annual Wildcat Winter Classic on the schedule the first full week of December.
