SCC girls survive late comeback

Southern Coffey County High's girls held off a second half comeback by Chase County to earn a five-point victory at home Tuesday. Josie Weers and Karley Ohl led the Lady Titans offense with 21 and 12 points, respectively.

LE ROY — The Southern Coffey County High boys and girls split a pair of home games against Chase County on Tuesday. 

The Titan boys (1-14) were dominated on both ends of the floor in a 61-6 defeat. The Lady Titans (7-8) edged out Chase County in the second half, 55-50, after the Bulldogs made a comeback from being down by 16 points. 

Girls Basketball

SCC jumped out to an early lead when Ross Snovelle hit a pair of three’s and Josie Weers banked in a couple of layups and a free throw. Chase County’s Madelyn Wilson scored four points in the first to keep the Bulldogs in the game down by four, 14-10. 

The Lady Titans tacked on 21 points in the second quarter when Weers led the way with eight points on a trio of two-point buckets. Jalea True drained a couple of two’s and a pair of free throws and SCC took a commanding 16-point advantage. 

Wilson was the go-to scorer again for the Bulldogs in the second quarter when she scored a trio of layups and a free throw. 

Southern Coffey County led Chase County at the half, 35-19. 

Chase County got back into the game in the third when Wilson scored five points and Alexis DeLong added four in a 16-point third quarter for the Bulldogs. 

Karley Ohl and Weers each scored four for SCC but the Lady Titans found themselves only up by eight heading to the fourth. 

The Bulldogs weren’t done. Wilson scored 11 more points in the fourth on five layups to bring Chase County within striking distance. SCC was outscored in the fourth, 15-12, as Weers and True led the way again with four points apiece. 

The Lady Titans survived a surging second half comeback from Chase County and held on for the 55-50 victory. Weers led SCC offensively with 21 points, followed by Ohl’s 12 and True’s 11 points. 

Boys Basketball 

The Titans were held to only six points all night with only two of those points not being delivered off free throws. Seth Glue scored the lone two-point basket for SCC. 

Chase County dominated Southern Coffey County by scoring 25 points in the first quarter and taking a commanding 48-2 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs then led 57-5 at the end of the third quarter before breezing to a 61-6 victory. 

The Bulldogs were led by Aidan Eidman’s 14 points, Tucker Groh’s 11 points and Colin Monihen’s 10 points. Pax Vogel also added on seven points in the win.
