CANEY — Cross country runners are used to grueling races that test their endurance and mental capacity as much as their running potential.

On Monday, the runners got to try out their speed.

Iola and Humboldt both sent contingents to Caney Valley Tuesday for the Caney Valley Cross Country Sprint 2024.

The “sprint” in this case was a 1.5-mile run for high-schoolers and a 1-mile run for those in middle school.

Iola and Humboldt both came home with a plethora of medals.

Iola’s Keegan Hill, Cole Moyer and Brennen Coffield all brought home top-10 finishes in the high school boys race. Hill took second overall, finishing the 1.5 trek in 8 minutes.

Humboldt’s Anna Heisler took second, Teghen Jaro fourth and Tori Melendez fifth to lead the way for the high school girls.

The top 25 finishers in the high school races earned medals, as did the top 10 runners at the junior high level.
