BALTIMORE The Royals scored 10 runs in the first inning, matching a franchise record, and combined for a season-high 20 hits in a 15-7 victory over the Orioles on Tuesday night.
Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas hit two homers, drove in five runs and was one of four KC batters to knock at least three hits.
The last time Moustakas hit two home runs in a game here, he racked up nine RBIs during the Royals 2015 World Series championship season.
The Royals ran roughshod over the Orioles pitching staff in a 20-minute top of the first. Starter Dylan Bundy, who had only allowed 10 hits to the Royals in three previous outings, never recorded an out in the first inning. All seven batters he faced reached base and scored.
In the midst of Bundys outing, the Royals hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for the first time since Whit Merrifield, Jorge Bonifacio and Eric Hosmer combined to do it against the White Sox on July 23, 2017.
Jorge Soler cranked the first one. He dumped a two-run shot into the Orioles center-field bullpen 420 feet from home plate. Nearly 10 years after Alex Gordon drilled his own home run beyond Camden Yards right-field wall on July 1, 2008, Moustakas hit a homer on Tuesday that became the 99th to hit Eutaw Street on the fly.
Salvador Perez, the fourth batter of the game, followed with his own solo blast to center field.
When Gordon turned Bundys 28th pitch of the frame into a three-run homer, the first of his four hits Tuesday, Orioles manager Buck Showalters patience ran out. As Gordon ran around the bases, Showalter walked onto the field to call reliever Mike Wright Jr. into the game.
The last time the Royals scored 10 runs in an inning was on Aug. 23, 2006, against the Indians. The Royals lost that game, 15-13.
At Camden Yards, the Royals have scored 10 or more runs six times twice this decade. The last time they accomplished a similar feat, Moustakas hit a grand slam and three-run homer in the thick of the 2015 pennant race.
In the Royals 12th victory of the season, Opening Day starter Danny Duffy broke into the win column for the first time since late September. The only hit to mar Duffys night was Chris Davis second-inning leadoff homer. Duffy scattered six hits and struck out five batters in 51/3 innings.
Reliever Burch Smith gave up two runs in the eighth and Blaine Boyer allowed four runs in the ninth.
