CHANUTE — Iola Middle School’s volleyball teams had a rough road trip Tuesday. The Ponies won one of four matches against host Royster Middle School at Chanute.
Royster defeated the Iola eighth-grade A-team 25-5, 25-9. Torrie Lewis had two service aces and one kill for Iola. Kyra Moore had two ace serves and one set assist.
“Chanute was an excellent team and we just couldn’t stay with them,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade volleyball coach. “We did some things well and did make some great digs.”
In the B-team match, Royster beat Iola 25-5, 25-16. Lauren Hunt had two ace serves for Iola while Brianne Jett and Caressa Lowell each had one ace serve. Shelby Smith had a kill.
Carlin said the eighth-graders couldn’t seem to pass the ball in the first game. “We did a lot better during the second game but missed way too many serves.”
Struggling with serving and serve receive were the Pony seventh-grade A-team players. Royster won the A-team match 25-7, 25-18.
“The squad settled down in the second set and held the lead for several points before the Rockets came back to win,” said Muffy Fehr, IMS seventh-grade volleyball coach.
Fehr said Valeree Burtnett, Emily McKarnin and McKayli Cleaver played well defensively. Ashlie Shields had several great saves on the front row.
The lone match win for Iola came in seventh-grade B-team play. Iola defeated Royster 25-21, 25-11.
Allyson Hobbs’ serving powered the Ponies to the first set win as she served for 10 points. Taelyn Sutterby had two digs.
Fehr said Elise Wolf, Joie Whitney, Micaiah Larney, Hannah Ingle and Briana Pennett contributed to the win.
Cassie Delich and Chyanne Vaughn combined serving for 18 of Iola’s 25 points in the second set.
“Our consistent serving in the second set really got the win for us,” Fehr said.
The IMS teams travel to Burlington for a tournament Saturday.
