Road unkind to ACC softball

The first and last innings of four games over the weekend were pivotal in losses for Allen Community College softball. The Red Devils played at Johnson County and Independence.

Troubles early and late proved fatal for Allen Community College’s softball team.

The Red Devils combined to go 0-4 with doubleheaders at Johnson County Community College Friday, losing 8-0 and 5-1, and at Independence Saturday, with losses of 8-0 and 6-3.

FRIDAY

Johnson County scored three in the fourth and four in the fifth to break open a 1-0 lead in the opener. Meanwhile, Cavaliers starter Kyla Etter scattered four hits over her five innings of work. 

Kinsey Stuewe and Trista Argabright had singles in the fifth, but Etter ended the threat with a ground ball. Aubrey Willis and Alayna Brown had the other hits for ACC

Starter Cynae Wiley surrendered six hits in four innings with two strikeouts. Andrea wilson allowed two hits in one-third of an inning.

Johnson County scored five runs in the first to take control in Game 2.

A bases-loaded single by Wilson scored Lindsay Shippy in the top of the third, but the Red Devils left the bases loaded when Johnson County starter Kaylin Watkins induced a ground ball to end the threat.

Collins rebounded nicely from her rocky start, allowing just one other hit in her six innings of work. She struck out five and walked three.

SATURDAY

Independence scored one in the first and three in the second to take the early lead. The Pirates tacked on four in the fourth.

Indy pitcher Kenna Ferguson pitched five innings, allowing only a single to Shippy in the third.

Wiley started for the Red Devils, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts in 3 ⅔ innings. Collins came on in relief and retired a batter with no hits in her third of an inning.

The Pirates scored six in the first and hung on from there to win the finale.

Wilson’s RBI single scored Brown in the third to pare the deficit to 6-1.

Stuewe blasted a two-run home run in the sixth to pull Allen to within 6-3, but the Red Devils then stranded a batter later in the frame, then could not plate Brown who singled with one out in the seventh.

Wilson gave the Devils a lift in relief. She pitched 5 ⅓ innings, allowing no runs and three hits with five strikeouts.

Collins took the loss, surrendering six hits in two-thirds of an inning. She struck out one batter.
