Athletes of the Month

June 25, 2019 - 11:35 AM

Your choices have been heard, and the cuts have been made. These are June?s nominees for the Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.

Ryker Curry? When Ryker was diagnosed with POTS, a condition which affects blood circulation, he worried he might not be able to play baseball again. But that hasn?t stopped Curry from being one of the Iola A Indians top ballplayers. Currently he has a .351 batting average (second on the team), 11 RBIs, and a 1.81 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings pitched.

Ryan Sellman ? Let?s just go ahead and say it: Ryan is one of SEK?s finest golfers. The Humboldt Cub golfer was most recently named 2nd team all-state by the Kansas Golf Coaches Association. At the state golf meet, Sellman came away with a third-place finish overall, shooting a one-over 72. The senior has qualified for the state tournament all four years of high school.

Derek Bycroft ? Earlier this year, the back-to-back 4A-II Kansas Pitcher of the Year committed to play college ball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. This season, Bycroft went 7-0 in 41 innings and gave up just 21 hits. All this while batting .481 for the season and going 15-0 over the last two years.

Ursula Billings ? Not only is Ursula one of the top long distance runners in 1A and an amazing runner in 4A cross country, but she also competes on the Iola Seahorses Swim Team. At the Seahorses? first meet in Coffeyville, Ursula won all of her individual events! Ursula?s relay teams also placed second, with only one week of practice before the meet.

Kinzley Fountain ?  Kinzley bats leadoff for El Charro in the Pigtail league for rec ball. Despite being one of the smaller girls on the team, she makes up for it with her top-notch hitting and speed, which allows her to run the bases very well. She is also a leader, constantly motivating her teammates.

Gabby Vargas-Garcia ? Gabby also plays for El Charro and is one of the biggest bats in the lineup. Through the first four games of the season, she has hit six singles and one double with seven RBI?s while batting third in the lineup.
