The month of August is coming to a close, which means it is time to announce the nominees for Allen County Area Athletes of the Month.
Milo Franklin This youngster gives 110% in everything he does on the ball field. Franklin lives in Iola and competes in baseball, soccer, football, basketball, dodgeball and wrestling. His positive attitude and enthusiasm are showcased in all the sports he competes in.
Caden Coltrane Coltrane currently plays tackle football for the youth fifth and sixth-grade leagues. Coltrane also played baseball, soccer and flag football in Iola Recreation Department leagues. Coltrane is a multi-sport athlete who does not shy away from his love of sports.
Casen Barker A two-sport athlete at Iola High, Barker played a crucial role in the AA Iola Indians run to state over the summer. For this fall, Barker displayed his leadership and will to do what is best for his team by relinquishing his role as quarterback to stepping back into his more natural position as a fullback for the upcoming football season.
Alexi Fernandez Fernandez regularly trains at Kansas City Ballet, and during these training opportunities, has received numerous recognitions and scholarships. Fernandez also attends dance classes, conventions and competitions around the country, learning from renowned teachers and choreographers. Most recently, Fernandez traveled to Massachusetts to attend an 11-day dance intensive at Smith College.
Elka Billings Over the summer, Billings faced the challenge of creating a cross country program at Crest High. Billings put in hours recruiting athletes, along with creating social media pages to recruit any interested Lancer students. Billings also swam for the Iola Seahorses at the Iola Recreation Department this summer.
Elizabeth Melendez The incoming freshman at Humboldt High will run cross country and track for the Lady Cubs. In many instances, first-year high school athletes dont prepare themselves for the upcoming season, but not Melendez. Shes made it a priority to get in top shape to help her team compete for a league title this fall for cross country.
