After carefully examining nominations, The Register is ready to announce the nominees for July Allen County Area Athlete of the Month.
Isaac Vink The former Iola High and current KU student, has helped the AA Iola Indians reach state for the eighth time in the last nine years. This will be Vinks seventh trip to state counting high school and Legion baseball. Vink also leads the Indians in ERA and innings pitched.
Bradyn Cole This summer, Cole was deemed the future of Iola pitching by A Iola Indians head coach Troy Smith. Most recently, Cole tossed a no-hitter in the Indians first game of the Junior American Legion Kansas State Tournament against Marysville. Cole has also been preparing for the Iola High Mustangs upcoming football season.
David Heard A legend who doesnt let his age slow down his love for the game, Heard currently plays for a 75-and-older slow-pitch softball team. Last month, Heard competed in Illinois for a tournament, and had enough juice in the tank to play three games in one day.
Christine Helman Despite track and field taking place in the springtime, Helman hasnt taken the summer off. At the Sunflower Games in Topeka, Helman finished second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Elza Clift In the Junior Ponytail championship game, Clift was an absolute presence from the mound for Nelson Quarries. She nearly threw a no-hitter, allowing one hit, but picked up 14 strikeouts in the process.
Zoie Hesse A force behind the plate on offense and defense, Hesse helped Nelson Quarries roll past Allen County Regional Hospital in the Junior Ponytail championship game. Hesse had a two-run home run in the 5-1 victory.
