Iola High’s undefeated baseball team will have some tough competition to deal with in order to advance past next week’s Class 4A Regional Tournament.
While the Mustangs (15-0) are the top seed, they’ll be faced with a bracket that includes the state’s second-ranked Class 4A school in Ottawa High — the last school to hand Iola a loss — and highly regarded Fort Scott (11-4).
As the top seed, the Mustangs will take on the winner of the Prairie View and Anderson County matchup Monday afternoon at the Allen Community College baseball diamond. The two schools will play at about 3 p.m., with the winner turning around immediately to face the Mustangs, at approximately 5:30.
The winner of that contest will advance next Thursday to the semifinals at Garnett to play either fourth seed Paola or fifth seed Chanute. The semifinal begins at 2 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, second seed Ottawa takes on seventh seed Osawatomie. Third seed Fort Scott plays sixth seed Louisburg.
The regional championship is scheduled to begin at around 7 p.m. next Thursday in Garnett.
If Iola and Ottawa were to meet again, it would be the first time since Ottawa handed Iola a 13-5 loss in the 2012 regional title game.

THE FILLIES have several prominent obstacles to contend with as well in their regional softball playoffs at Chanute.
Iola (4-11) is the eighth seed and will play ninth seed Parsons (3-13) at 3 p.m. Monday in Chanute. The winner gets to take on top seed Frontenac at about 4:45 Monday.
If the Fillies make it past Frontenac, they’ll return to Chanute Wednesday for the semifinals and finals to face either fourth seed Baxter Springs (12-6) or fifth seed Chanute at 3 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Fort Scott takes on seventh seed Pittsburgh. Third-seeded Girard faces sixth seed Columbus.
The championship will be in Chanute Wednesday evening.

HUMBOLDT High’s baseball team earned the top seed of its Class 3A regional tournament, courtesy of the Cubs’ 12-2 record.
Humboldt earned a first-round bye and will play at noon Wednesday against the winner of Jayhawk-Linn and Neodesha, who face off Monday afternoon.
On the other side of the bracket, Eureka is the second seed and also has a first-round bye. Third-seeded Burlington (11-3) hosts sixth seed Erie in the first-round game Monday.
The semifinals and finals will be Wednesday at the Neosho County Community College baseball diamond.
Meanwhile, the Lady Cubs are the second seed in their 3A regional tournament.
They will host Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Sweatt Field in Humboldt. The winner will travel to Pittsburg Tuesday for the semifinal and final round. The Humboldt-Colgan winner will take on the winner of third seed Southeast of Cherokee and sixth seed Erie.
Jayhawk-Linn has the top seed and a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Riverton-Galena matchup.

YATES CENTER’S girls have the top seed in the Class 2-1A Regional in Uniontown, a bracket that includes Marmaton Valley.
Yates Center (13-3) has a first-round bye. Marmaton Valley (3-11) is the fifth seed and will take on fourth seed Arma-Northeast at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in Uniontown. The winner faces Yates Center at 3 p.m. next Thursday in Uniontown in the semifinals.
Uniontown is the host and second seed and also has a first-round bye. Uniontown will play either third seed St. Paul  or sixth seed Altoona-Midway on the other side of the bracket.

ON THE baseball side, Marmaton Valley is the second seed, while Yates Center is the sixth seed in the tournament, hosted by Yates Center.
Yates Center will take on third seed Northeast at 5 p.m. Monday, with the winner advancing to play Marmaton Valley at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
