Playing Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheaders back-to-back, Allen Community College’s Red Devils went 1-3. They lost twice on the road Tuesday then split a home doubleheader Wednesday in four close contests.
The Red Devils are 19-19 overall. They stand at 6-12 in Jayhawk East play and 7-13 in Region VI, Division II action. They host Hutchinson Community College Friday and Hesston Saturday.
Allen’s Keelyn Bonar and Independence Community College’s Alaina Stubblefield staged a pitching duel in Wednesday’s opener. The teams battled for 10 innings before a decision was made.
The Red Devils scored a run when Paige Rothwell, who was 3-for-5 in the game, doubled and scored on a one-out single by Bonar, who was 3-for-4. The Pirates produced the tying run in the sixth inning.
It stood at 1-1 at the end of seven innings. The teams and both pitchers went into extra innings. Allen had two on and no outs in the bottom of the seventh and didn’t score then had three on and two out in the ninth.
When the teams hit the 10th inning, they went to the tie-breaker of having the lead-off hitter awarded second base. Independence moved the runner to third with one gone. The Red Devils’ defense came up with a double play, throwing out the batter and tagging out the runner trying to score.
Ashley Ribelin was ACC’s lead-off hitter starting at second base. Alex Hill moved Ribelin to third on a sacrifice bunt and Erin Schwant drew a walk. This time with two away the Red Devils got the job done as Taylor Easum drove in the winning run on a single.
Bonar limited the Pirates to four hits, walked one and struck out six. Stubblefield worked around 13 ACC hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Rothwell had two singles and a double and Bonar had three singles. Maecy Charleston and Easum each had two singles. Ribelin doubled while Jamee McEndree and Lauren Poertner each had a single.
In second game, it was Independence coming up with the winning run, 6-5. Allen rallied to tie the game 5-5 after falling behind 5-1.
The Red Devils pushed across three runs in the fourth. Charleston and Ribelin had back-to-back singles and Hill — Allen’s starting pitcher — drove in two runs on a double. Hill scored on a single by Kayla Van Vliet, who was 3-for-3.
A two-out error put Charleston on in Allen’s fifth inning followed by another miscue to allow Ribelin to reach safely. Hill’s single plated the tying run.
Independence scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on three walks and a wild pitch.
Hill went five innings and was charged with five runs on nine hits plus struck out five. Audra Nelson pitched two innings, giving up one run on four walks and struck out three.
Van Vliet had three singles and Hill hit a single and a double. Charleston hit two singles. Rothwell, Bonar and Ribelin each had a single.
