Allen County Community College’s volleyball team had a final tune-up before opening the 2011 season.
Last weekend, the Red Devils went 3-1 in scrimmage play hosted by Butler County Community College in El Dorado. Allen County begins season play Friday and Saturday in a tournament at Fort Scott Community College.
“The scrimmage weekend was an opportunity to measure our last two weeks of structured practice,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
“We were able to run different lineup options and evaluate where our strengths and weaknesses lie.”
The Red Devils had scrimmage wins over North Oklahoma (25-22, 25-15), Labette (25-21, 25-18) and Cloud County (25-12, 25-12). They lost to Barton County (25-20, 25-21).
In the four scrimmage matches, sophomore Alli Jenick and freshman Hayley Mertens each delivered 20 kills. Mertens went out late in the day against Barton County with an ankle sprain. Peters said Mertens was going to take a few days off and “we hope she’ll be back for this weekend.”
Sophomore Makhala Giardina had 16 kills and freshman Jordyne Seichepine had 12 kills. Allen County’s players recorded nine solo blocks and 17 block assists in four matches.
Freshman Jacqui Ortiz was credited with 41 set assists and freshman Sabrina Stanley had 12 assists.
Mertens had five service aces and Jenicke had four ace serves. Freshman Alisha Keith had three ace serves.
Jenicke came up with 30 defensive digs followed by 23 from Mertens and 22 from sophomore Nicole Reed. Stanley and Ortiz each had 18 digs.
Peters announced Wednesday that Giardina will be red-shirted this season.
