SALINA — Allen Community College’s baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep Thursday.
The Red Devils rode a 10-hit attack in the opener to defeat Brown Mackie College 8-5. Allen had an easier go of it in the nightcap with a 12-2 romp.
The victories give ACC a 10-5 record as they travel to Kansas City, Kan., Community College for games today and Sunday.
In the opener, the Red Devils pushed across single runs in the second and third innings, the first on a bases loaded walk to Travis Stafford, the second on a run-scoring single by Eric Seymour.
The Allen offense began to click with two runs each in innings four, five and six.
Timothy Lewis doubled in Stafford on a double in the fourth, then scored on a Garrett Hess sacrifice fly. Lewis also singled in two runs in the fifth to stretch the ACC lead to 6-2.
Brown Mackie closed the gap to 6-4 before Garrett Rasch drove in Seymour in the sixth frame. Lewis followed with another walk with the bases loaded to drive in Kyle Fultz.
Brown Mackie pitchers deliverd 11 walks and hit three ACC batters in the contest.
Tanner Lee picked up the win, giving up five hits, four runs and six walks in his five inning on the mound. He struck out five. Lucas Westervelt earned the save with two innings of relief work, giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout.
Lewis had two hits, including a double. Seymour singled twice, as did Rasch. Adding a single each were Stafford and Nathan Russell.
THE RED Devils led 4-0 before erupting for six runs in the third to lead 10-0.
The first inning featured a run-scoring base hit by Hess and bases-loaded walks to Drake Koerner and Sky Bushyhead.
In the third, Bushyhead drove in a run with a single. Rasch walked to drive in another run and Lewis drove in two on a single to shallow center. An error and wild pitch provided the final two runs of the frame.
Stafford’s speed provided ACC’s second inning tally. He singled, stole second and third, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Russell.
Tevin Kendall started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four. Joe Saia, Conor Burns and Bill Wigington combined to pitch two innings of hitless relief.
Control, again, was an issue for Brown Mackie’s pitchers, who delivered seven more free passes to ACC batters in the nightcap.
