OVERLAND PARK — Allen Community College’s men picked up their 10th win of the season, ending their pre-Christmas schedule with a 96-88 win over Johnson County Saturday.
The Red Devil women weren’t as successful against the undefeated Johnson County squad, falling 79-30.
The victory for the ACC men was a nice rebound after a heartbreaking loss on Thursday to visiting NEO A&M, in which Allen was whistled for a foul with no time remaining, giving the Norse two free throws to win.
The Red Devils carry a 10-5 record into the Christmas break and have won six of their last eight.
On Saturday, Allen overcame a spirited challenge from Johnson County’s Pat Jones, who scored 38 points for the Cavaliers.
The Red Devils led by as many as 20 in the second half before the Cavaliers trimmed the lead to six with three minutes remaining. Raheem Tyner scored 28 with nine rebounds to lead the victors. Tyrone Jones followed with 26 points and nine boards.
Fouls were plentiful. The teams combined to shoot 78 free throws.
Meanwhile, Johnson County proved itself worthy of the women’s no. 5 ranking in NJCAA Division II. The Cavaliers raced to a 47-15 lead by halftime and never looked back.
The Red Devils were a cool 20 percent from the floor (11 of 55) and hit 3 of 22 3-pointers.
O’ceonna Weston led Allen with nine points and nine rebounds. Nicole Salazar had five assists and two steals.
Five Johnson County players reached double figures, led by Kariell Butt with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
The Red Devil squads return to action Jan. 8. Allen’s women host Cottey College, while the ACC men travel to Hutchinson.
