Home openers are supposed to be just like Thursday’s for Allen County Community College’s baseball team.
Perfect weather, albeit a bit breezy, and two victories.
The Red Devils picked up a five-inning, run-ruled 10-0 win and 7-1 victory over visiting Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s junior varsity. That got the Devils to within a victory of a .500 record in the young season at 4-5.
The doubleheader was also a tune-up for this weekend’s Jayhawk Eastern Division opener at home for the Red Devils. The Red Devils host Fort Scott Community College’s Greyhounds in a four-game series.
Today the first pitch is at 1 o’clock at Red Devil Field. Sunday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
Brodie Mitchell threw four innings of one-hit, shutout baseball for the victory in game one. Mitchell walked two batters and struck out eight.
Lucas Westervelt struck out four batters in the fifth for ACCC.
Yes, four.
There were two dropped third strikes. The second one resulted in a tag out by the Red Devil catcher to end the game.
The Red Devils scored three runs in the first inning. With one gone, Tim Lewis singled and Kyle Johnston reached on an error by the Eagles. Caleb Wilburn loaded the bases by drawing a walk.
Garrett Hess delivered a two-run single. Wilburn stole third base and scored on a base it by Eric Seymour.
Allen County added six runs in the third, all coming after two batters had been retired. Hess walked followed by a double from Seymour and a walk issued to Kyle Fultz. Tevin Kendall doubled to deep left field and two runs scored.
Garrett Rasch singled, Travis Stafford doubled and Lewis singled. Each one drove in a run.
Wilburn doubled to open the fourth inning and scored on a triple by Hess.
The other hit in the game was a single by Kendall.
Allen County used six pitchers in the second game. They gave up just one run on three hits and issued four walks.
Lewis got the Red Devils off on the right foot offensively. He hit a solo home run over the right-field fence with one gone in the first inning.
Lewis also had a single and a double in the game. Stafford had a double and a triple and Seymour connected for a single and a triple.
Allen County struck for five runs in the third inning using four hits, two walks and an OWU error. Two wild pitches allowed one run to score.
Johnston singled and doubled in the game. Drake Koerner and Nathan Russell each had a single.
The Eagles scored a run in the sixth on a single, a stolen base and two wild pitches. Allen County got the run back on a one-out triple by Stafford who scored on a base hit by Lewis.
Kendall, Layton Gray, Conor Burns, Steven Hilgendorf and Dalton Dreifurst each worked one inning for Allen County. Kendall started then Bill Wigington threw two innings and struck out five.
Wigington, Gray and Hilgendorf each allowed a hit. The run was charged to Hilgendorf, who also struck out two. Kendall struck out one batter and Dreifurst recorded three strikeouts to end the game.
