A strong performance by sophomore pitcher Camrynn Yardley assisted in snapping a four-game losing streak for Allen Community College Tuesday. The Red Devils swept a doubleheader with the Missouri State University West Plains Grizzlies.
Yardley’s four RBIs and seven strikeouts lifted Allen to a 13-1 run-rule victory over West Plains in the first game, then she added another three RBIs in a 15-7 victory in game two.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener on a first inning sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Jena Hendrix, a second inning RBI double by freshman catcher Makayla Hirschmann, and sophomore second baseman Paxton Meyer taking advantage of a fielding error. Yardley drove in a pair of
runs with a double, then Hendrix struck again on a two-run single to give Allen a 7-0 lead.
A three-run double by freshman outfielder Casey Schaffer put the Red Devils in striking distance of a run-rule, then a Yardley homer and a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Kaylee Spreer sealed the victory by the fifth inning.
Hendrix drove in three while Schaffer had two. Hirschman and sophomore shortstop Bailee Campbell had a strong game in the batter’s box. Campbell went 2 of 3 while Schafer went 1 of 2 with a walk.
The Grizzlies gave the Red Devils a bit of a scare after tying game 2 in the fifth, but Allen pulled away in the late innings.
Spreer put Allen on the scoreboard with a grounder to plate Campbell. The Red Devils extended their lead to 5-0 on a pair of RBI doubles by Schaffer and Hendrix, a sacrifice fly by Hirschmann and Hendrix scoring on a passed ball.
West Plains rallied to tie the game by the third inning , but the stalemate did not last long.
Sophomore pitcher Abby Marsh put Allen back in the driver’s seat with an RBI grounder. A Hirschmann sacrifice fly, a Campbell RBI single and Marsh later scoring on a passed ball gave Allen full control by the end of the fourth at 9-5. West Plains chipped away at Allen’s lead, but a five-run sixth inning on home runs by Yardley and Campbell sealed the victory.
Campbell ended the game with four RBIs, followed by Yardley with three. Sophomore second baseman Rhenn Beckley drove in a run while hitting 1 of 2 with three walks. On the mound, Marsh and Yardley split time with Yardley picking up her second win of the day after tallying six strikeouts over three innings.
The Red Devils improve to 7-12 and will take on Southeast Community College (11-8) Friday. The Red Devils open a lengthy Jayhawk Conference campaign over the next few weeks. They host Hesston (2-9) March 27, then Fort Scott (6-8) on the 29th to wrap up the month.
They open April at home hosting Labette (5-11) April 3, then Kansas City Kansas Community College April 5.
