Red Devils sweep Greyhounds in East play

Four games played, four games won.

Allen County Community College’s Red Devil baseball team began Jayhawk Eastern Division conference play at home over the weekend. The four-game series went well for the home team.

The Red Devils got three complete-game performances from pitchers. They rallied to win close games.

Most important, the Red Devils are 4-0 in conference and improved to 8-5 overall.

In Saturday’s opener against Fort Scott Community College’s Greyhounds, Zak Mickens threw seven innings for a 3-2 victory for ACCC. Mickens gave up two runs in the second inning then held the  Hounds scoreless for five innings.

Mickens gave up six hits, walked one and struck out eight.

The Red Devils tied the game with two runs in the fourth and got the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Travis Stafford and Garrett Rasch each had a single and a double for Allen County. Caleb Wilburn hit two singles. Nathan Russell and Kyle Fultz had a single apiece.

Allen County run-ruled the Greyhounds in the second game Saturday, 11-1 in five innings. Joe Mapes threw a four-hitter going the full five innings. He had four strikeouts.

The Red Devils amassed 12 hits in the contest. They trailed 1-0 after one inning but had a six-run second highlighted by a two-run double by Stafford and a two-run triple by Wilburn.

Allen County added two runs in each of the next two innings. In the fifth, with two gone, Tim Lewis singled and Russell drove in the game-ending run on a double.

Russell connected for two singles and a double in the game and Wilburn had two doubles. Stafford hit a single and a double while Lewis and Fultz each had two singles. Garrett Hess singled.

Jared Sterling became the third ACCC pitcher in a row to record a complete game on the mound for ACCC over the weekend. Sterling was the winning pitcher in a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon.

Fort Scott scored single runs in the first and second inning for a 2-0 lead. Allen County gained the lead in the third inning.

Stafford and Lewis had back-to-back base hits. Wilburn’s two-out single loaded the bases. Hess doubled to drive in three runs.
