Allen Community College’s athletic teams were spread all through Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday, but the top highlight came from right here in Iola where the Red Devil softball team swept Ottawa University’s junior varsity.
The games presented a good chance to get Allen’s young pitching staff some much-needed experience and confidence.
In game one’s 7-3 victory, Allen’s Dela Boyd pitched five innings of relief and only allowed one run, two hits and a walk while striking out five. The freshman also hit a homer.
Alexis Ramos went 3-for-3 with a double in game one.
In game two, freshman Courtney Gard pitched a complete game for a 8-3 win. Gard struck out five.
Freshman Julia Keating went 2-for-3 with a homer while Humboldt-graduate Delaney Umholtz also had two hits.
BASEBALL
The Red Devils split with State Fair Community College on the road in Sedalia, Mo.
The Red Devils were able to take game one, 4-1, behind Jake Butterfield’s complete game. The sophomore struck out five.
Sky-Lar Culver was the offensive star of game one with a 2-for-3 day and a RBI.
The Roadrunners won game two 5-2. Allen sophomore Robby Enriquez hit his seventh homer of the season in the loss.
