Allen Community College basketball and baseball were both in action over the weekend. ACC’s hoopers traveled to Cowley County, while the Allen sluggers were at Carl Albert State College in Oklahoma.
Here is how the Red Devils performed:
MEN’S BASKETBALL
After starting 7-0 in the Jayhawk Conference, ACC is now 2-9 in its last 11 conference games, losing to Cowley 123-98.
The Red Devils enjoyed an early lead through the first 10 minutes of the game before the Tigers got in their groove. Cowley’s full-court press forced ACC into mistakes that translated to easy transition buckets, and helped the Tigers lead 46-36 at halftime.
In the second half, ACC couldn’t keep pace with Cowley. Allen outrebounded the Tigers by one, and attempted 52 free throws, but 29 turnovers in the contest was a number the Red Devils could not recover from.
Malik Hardom finished as ACC’s leading scorer, posting a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Also fishing in double figures were Joel Boyce with 17, Jalen Sasser scoring 12, and Shaikim Jenks adding 11.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Lady Devils trailed by one at the break, but couldn’t take control in the second half, losing 85-65 to Cowley County.
After only scoring nine points in the first quarter, ACC outscored the Tigers by three in the second to trail 31-30 at intermission. Ariel Walker was superb for the Lady Devils, scoring 24 points on 50% shooting, and raining in six 3-pointers. Walker was the only Lady Devil to finish in double figures.
In the second half, Cowley outpaced ACC 25-15 in the third quarter, and the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome in the fourth. The Tigers shot an overly efficient 49.2% from the field versus ACC’s 43.9%. Ball security was also a factor in ACC’s loss, the Devils committed 16 turnovers, and Cowley eight.
BASEBALL
ACC went 1-3 against Carl Albert State College, earning a split on Saturday, and dropping both games on Sunday.
In game 1 on Saturday, Jakota Sainsbury led the way on the mound, going six innings while allowing seven hits, three runs, and striking out three. The Red Devils never trailed, and saw six different players earn RBIs. Jonah Weisner finished with two hits and two RBIs to help ACC capture the 7-3 victory.
ACC’s pitching did not have an answer for Viking batters in game 2, allowing 14 hits that turned 13 runs. Offensively, the Red Devils couldn’t find a way to get runners across the plate as 12 ACC hits turned into only three runs, resulting in the 13-3 loss.
