Red Devils struggle at State Fair Classic

SEDALIA, Mo. —  Not much worked for Allen County Community College’s Red Devils as they still have not recorded a victory in the 2010-2011 basketball season.

The Red Devil men were on the road over the weekend in the State Fair Classic hosted by State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo. They haven’t been able to put a full game together with all phases firing at the same time.

As in most of their seven losses, the Red Devils were working in a catch-up mode early. In Friday’s 87-61 loss to Missouri State University-West Plains, Allen County trailed 48-35 at halftime.

The Grizzlies outscored the Red Devils 39-26 in the second half. They shot 52 percent, 32 of 61, from the field while the Red Devils were 23 of 53 for 43 percent.

On Saturday, the Red Devils faced the host Roadrunners losing 92-65. State Fair held a 46-27 halftime advantage.

The Red Devils shot just 37 percent, 23 of 63, from the field. The Roadrunners were 30 0f 62, 48 percent, plus cashed in 19 of 30 free throw attempts. Allen County hit 11 of 29 free throw tries.

Allen County (0-7) try to put a halt to the losing streak tonight at home. Ottawa University’s junior varsity comes to Iola for a 7 o’clock game at the ACCC gym.

Against West Plains, Jason Smith fired in 25 points to pace the Red Devils. Smith also pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out eight assists and had three steals. Keevis Tukes hit three three-pointers on his way to 11 points.

Rickey Hollis added eight points and Terrell Shears had seven points. Robert Wright scored four points followed by three from Tyler Myrick, two from Tahshaun Kelly and one by Jake Benton. Benton and Shears each had six rebounds.

Smith poured in 29 points and controlled 13 rebounds against State Fair. He had six of Allen County’s six assists.

Tukes added 10 points, which included three threes. Kelly and Shears had seven points apiece. Hollis tossed in five points.

Wright scored three and Chuck O’Neal had two points. Scoring one point each were Chad Rourk and Benton.

Tonight’s game is the next to last home contest for the Red Devils before Christmas. They open Jayhawk Eastern Division play Dec. 1 at Neosho County Community College in Chanute.

Allen County hosts Highland Community College in Jayhawk East play on Dec. 4. The Red Devils will have three road games  after than before the break.
