OVERLAND PARK — After dropping a 3-1 decision in the opener Monday, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils came back to post a 5-0 win in the nine-inning contest with conference-leading Johnson County.
The split of the Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader, their last of the season, put the Red Devils at 18-18 and in fifth place. They are 25-22 on the season.
“We played pretty good baseball Monday. We’ve played well of late battling through injuries so I’m looking for us to do well in the playoffs,” said Val McLean, ACCC head coach.
The Red Devils will be on the road in the first weekend of the Region VI playoffs this Saturday and Sunday. They just don’t know for sure where they’ll be playing.
In the first game Monday, Johnson County got two runs in the third to wipe out ACCC’s 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers added a run in the fifth.
Allen County got a run in the second. Curtiss Bunch singled and moved over on a bunt single by Marcus Peavler. Michael Schell drew a walk to load the bases. A one-out sacrifice fly by Wyatt Hall scored the run.
The only other hits in the game for ACCC were two singles by Connor McCrite.
Matt Stalcup pitched four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out one.
David Ormiston threw two innings in relief. He allowed one run on two hits, one walk and one hit batter plus had one strikeout.
The Red Devils used four pitchers in the second game. Bryan Couch started and worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking one. He struck out three.
Mark Thompson, who got the win, pitched three scoreless innings and gave up three hits, hit a batter and struck one out. John Michael Moore worked one inning, did not give up a run and had one hit, one hit batter and two strikeouts.
Aaron Burke pitched two scoreless innings. He hit two batters but also struck out two.
Allen County scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the eighth.
Brayden Brumley had two singles and a triple. Schell hit a double and a single. McCrite had two singles and Bunch doubled.
Allen County plays at Butler Community College today.
