BALDWIN — Jaren Moorman and Kyle Johnston had a monster game at the plate for Allen Community College Wednesday. In a 7-4 victory over host Baker University’s junior varsity, the two combined for seven hits in eight at bats.
Moorman hit three singles and a double while Johnston connected for three singles. The Red Devils had two three-run innings to lead Baker’s JV 7-2 after six innings.
Gage Dickerson picked up the pitching win, going five shutout innings and giving up one hit and two walks. He struck out three. Joe Saia allowed two runs on one hit, one walk and one hit batter in the sixth. Lucas Westervelt worked two innings and gave up two runs on four hits, one walk and two hit batters.
Other hits in the game for ACC were a single and a double by Travis Stafford, and a single each by Drake Koerner and Dalton Dreifurst.
The Red Devils came up short in the second game, losing 8-7. Baker scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the split. Allen scored five runs in the third but only got two more runs — one each in the sixth and seventh.
Dreifurst started the game on the mound but gave way to Layton Gray after four innings. Gray pitched two innings then Westervelt came on in the seventh. The ACC pitchers gave up 10 hits and four walks.
Stafford, Patrick Grunderman and Smith each had two singles. Garrett Hess tripled and Nathan Russell singled.
Allen is 18-26 overall. The Red Devils have 12 games left in the regular season.
This weekend they are at home in their next to last Jayhawk Eastern Division four-game series, hosting Highland. They play two games today and two Sunday starting at 1 o’clock each afternoon at Red Devil Field.
Allen finishes up Jayhawk East play next weekend at Neosho County in Chanute.
