Junior College Baseball: Allen County Red Devils

The Allen County baseball team finished off its series with Ottawa University’s junior varsity squad on Tuesday splitting the first half of the series 10-2 and 10-13 but winning the overall series 3-1 after winning the first two games 10-0 and 11-1 back on Feb. 12.

The win moves the Red Devils to 19-13 on the season.

In game one, Allen County got off to a 4-0 lead. Ottawa punched back with two in the top of the second but that would be all from the Spirit.

The Red Devils scored two in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of sixth to get the win.

Starter Jacob Hollingsworth earned the start going three innings and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Justus Burke had a nice day at the plate, recording four hits and six RBIs including a home run. Tim Wood also hit a home run which was good for two runs.

Burke was also just a triple away from the cycle after hitting two singles, a double and a home run.

The Red Devils bullpen would fail them in the second matchup.

Allen County got out to a 3-0 lead after the first three innings. Ottawa followed that up by hitting eight unanswered runs (four in both the third and fifth innings). Allen County retook the lead with a six-run bottom of the fifth to move to a 9-8 advantage.

The Ottawa bats got back at it, hitting five runs in the sixth and seventh to push their lead to 13-9. The Red Devils had a final shot to tie it up or get the win in the bottom of the seventh but only got a single run across before taking the loss.

Sky-Lar Culver and Josh Mann both homered with Culver recording three runs on two hits and Mann scoring two runs on his one hit.

Baxter Mays also drove home two runs on one hit.

Reliever Nathan Woodruff earned the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in just one inning.

The Red Devils had a rough time in the field, racking up five errors including two for Mays.

The Red Devils travel to Johnson County today for the road half of their series versus the Cavaliers.
