Allen Community College baseball entered Thursday’s doubleheader with Neosho County Community College locked in a first place tie atop the Jayhawk Conference’s East Division.

Tha’ts exactly where the team exited the day as well.

Allen topped Neosho 10-3 in the first game, but the Panthers got their revenge in game two with a 12-0 shutout over the Red Devils.

The two teams are still on top of the division with matching 13-5 conference records as they prepare for their doubleheader today at 1 p.m., in Chanute.

In game one, Allen provided  starter Jake Butterfield with plenty of run support early as they raced to an 8-1 lead after the game’s first five innings of play.

That was all Butterfield needed as the Red Devil ace threw a complete game and only allowed two earned runs.

Butterfield allowed five hits and walked a pair. He also struck out five batters in the contest.

“He kept them off-balance and threw a lot of strikes,” Allen coach Clint Stoy said. “I’ve said it to our guys all year, if we can throw strikes we have a chance to win and that is what he did.”

The biggest hit of the game came off the bat of catcher Torrence Sumerlin as he hit a three-run home run in the third inning.

Game two was all Neosho as the Red Devil offense only was able to come up with three hits in the entire game.

The pitching for Allen wasn’t much better as they allowed runs in six of the eight innings played.
