As the season enters the final stages, the Allen Community College mens soccer team is searching for wins to reach the Jayhawk Conference tournament. Sunday was another step in the right direction.
The Red Devils handled Coffeyville with ease, winning 6-1, and dominating all phases of the game.
ACCs attack got started in the 8th minute, when a free kick was granted on the edge of the penalty area. Jordan Mase sent the ball over the Coffeyville wall, and into the back of the net to grant ACC the early lead. Nine minutes later, Roshod Nembhard added another to double the Red Devil lead. In the 27th minute, Davi Studarts corner found Cuan Kingwell at the back post for another ACC goal, and a 3-0 lead.
Coffeyville did get on the board in the 37th minute, but ACC responded with another goal. In the 39th minute, the Red Devils were granted another free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Payge Sinclair stepped up for ACC, and buried it into the top-left corner of the goal. Heading into halftime, ACC led 4-1.
Allen added two more goals in the second half to close out the 6-1 victory. Although the Red Devils offense flourished, head coach Doug Desmarteau was more pleased to see his team play together as a unit. With a group comprised of different nationalities, it has been difficult to create chemistry and one style of soccer.
If we play together we are really good, and we are terrible if we dont, Desmarteau said. We were pinging the ball around, with each player only having one or two touches. They didnt play selfish, and the buildup was great through the back and then the midfield.
The Red Devils have two games remaining in the season, with their next match scheduled for Wednesday against Neosho County Community College.
This win was big, Desmarteau said. We are still tied for fourth, which is the last playoff spot. We have to at least win one, or both of our next two games. But, we have ourselves a fighting chance, and I think the guys confidence is high.
