INDEPENDENCE — Allen Community College’s baseball team went 2-2 in a four-game Jayhawk Eastern Division series at Independence Community College over the weekend. The Red Devils won the first game on Friday and again on Saturday.

Sophomore pitcher Zak Mickens gave the Red Devils a fifth complete game performance on Friday in a 7-2 win. Allen lost the second game 7-4.

On Saturday, the Red Devils rolled to a 10-1 victory then dropped a 6-5 decision in eight innings to the ICC Pirates. No details on the Saturday games were available at press time.

With the 2-2 split of the Jayhawk East series, Allen is 10-14 in conference play and 16-21 overall. The Red Devils play a non-league doubleheader at Ottawa Wednesday then go to Parsons this weekend for four conference games with Labette Community College.

Mickens threw another complete game for Allen in Friday’s opener. Mickens (5-3) allowed six hits — all in the first four innings — to the Pirates. Independence had a 2-0 lead and was on the verge of getting more in the fourth.

Independence had the bases loaded on three hits and Mickens and the Red Devils worked out of trouble with a 6-4 force-out. Mickens pitched three scoreless and hitless innings while the Red Devil offense finally got on the scoreboard.

The Red Devils peppered Independence pitching for 14 hits — all but one were singles — in the game. In the fifth, Garrett Hess singled and with one gone, Sky Bushyhead and Tim Lewis each had a base hit to load the bases. Garrett Rasch drew a walk to force in a run.

Travis Stafford singled in the tying run then Caleb Wilburn had an RBI single to the Red Devils in front for good. The Red Devils scored two more runs in the sixth on singles by Kyle Fultz and Eric Seymour and an error by the Pirates.

Allen had one gone in the seven and added two more runs for the 7-2 win. Mickens worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. He walked one and struck out three in the game.

Seymour had three singles and Lewis had a double and a single. Nathan Russell and Bushyhead each had two base hits. Hitting a single apiece were Rasch, Stafford, Wilburn, Fultz and Hess.

The Pirates turned the tables on the Red Devils in the second game with 11 hits, which included four doubles, in a 7-4 win. Independence broke a 4-4 time with three runs in the sixth.
