Allen Community College’s baseball team was firing on all cylinders during their 18-8 beatdown of Labette Community College on Thursday.
The Red Devils were anything but gracious hosts to the visitors from Labette as they jumped to a 18-2 lead entering the seventh inning.
“It is the best we’ve played so far this year, with the exception of Independence, where we played pretty well,” said Clint Stoy. “We hit, we played defense and we threw strikes. When we do that, we are pretty good.”
Allen showed its power in the fifth inning when both Torey Jordan Jr., and Gunar Drinnen connected on home runs.
The rest of the game, the Red Devils used a frenzied hitting approach and recorded 20 hits in the game to post their 18 runs. They also drew six walks.
Allen had nine players connect on hits. Six of those batters recorded multiple hits.
“I’m happy with the fact that we didn’t take at-bats off,” Stoy said. “I can go to my bench and I have four or five other guys that can produce like the guys that are on the field at the time.”
Torrence Sumerlin led the way with fours hits. Roberto Enriquez, Drinnen and Jordan Jr., each got three knocks on the day.
Stoy was very pleased with his pitchers performance as well, despite allowing six runs in the seventh inning.
Danial Wilson threw the final four innings in relief of starter Chase Gooding. Wilson’s effort saves the rest of the pitching staff for a Saturday doubleheader at Labette.
“It is huge in a four-game series,” Stoy said. “ I had to run Danial Wilson out there after we scored eight (in the sixth inning) and it is basically, ‘Hey, keep us within 10.’ He had the biggest outting of anyone because he saved of pitching staff for the series.”
ALLEN WON the firs game 5-2 behind a very good pitching performan by freshman Cal Castle.
“Castle just really pitched outstanding,” Stoy said.
