Allen County Community College’s Red Devil softball team made it 10 wins in a row Tuesday. At home, the Red Devils swept a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader against the conference’s third-place team.
The Red Devils had to work overtime to get the wins. Both games, normally seven innings, went to nine innings before being decided Tuesday.
The Red Devils and Cardinals played eight full innings of scoreless softball in the opener. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Callie Umholtz drew a walk and Kylie Taylor moved the runner on a ground out. Denise Swanson reached on a Cardinal error which allowed the winning run to score.
Winning 1-0, the Red Devils moved their Jayhawk East record above .500. Lenzie Boring was the winning pitcher. She went the distance, limiting the Cardinals to two hits and she issued one walk.
Boring struck out 16 Labette batters. Boring also led the ACCC offense with three singles. Umholtz had a double while Tesla Allison and Kayla Johnston each had a single.
In the second game, Allen County scored three runs in the first inning. Boring doubled with one out and Jenna Sigg was hit by a pitch. Umholtz cranked out a three-run home run.
Allen County led 3-1 but Labette scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. The Cardinals led 6-3.
The Red Devils battled back. Umholtz drew a walk in the fourth and Taylor singled. With one gone, Brianne Smedley reached on a fielder’s choice but drove in two runs.
In the sixth, Umholtz got all the way to second base on an error. Ground-outs by Taylor and Alex Hill pushed Umholtz around for the tying run.
It came to the bottom of the ninth again. Smedley doubled and scored the winning run, 7-6, on a double by Ashley Ribelin.
Hill started the game for ACCC and went six innings. She gave up six runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Boring got the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings. She allowed one hit, walked one and struck out six.
Other hits in the game for ACCC were two singles by Taylor, a double by Jori Graf and a single by Kelci Owens.
The Red Devils are 8-6 in conference play and 24-12 overall. They play at Neosho County Thursday.
