Down two sets, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils came out of the match break ready to play Monday night. The break had been a momentum stopper for the Red Devils recently.
They faced a challenge to come back against NJCAA Division II’s 12th-ranked Johnson County Community College’s Cavaliers. The Cavaliers used a fast-paced game to win the first two sets of the Jayhawk Eastern Division match.
“We were able to force Johnson to make all the mistakes in set three,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach. “Then in set four we became our on worse enemy. We struggled again.”
Johnson County (16-7, 6-0)walked out of the ACCC gym with a 25-20, 25-22, 21025, 25-19 win. The Red Devils dropped to 13-16 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Jacqui Ortiz had and 11-point serving run in the third set for Allen County. She also was credited with 21 set assists for the match and six digs.
Makhala Giardina, Alli Jenicke and Jordyne Seichepine each racked up 10 kills at the net plus a solo block apiece. Jenicke had thee assisted blocks as did Kaitlyn Speer. Seichepine and Randi Billings each had two assisted blocks.
Jenicke came up with 26 digs and Nicole Reed made 20 digs. Sabrina Stanley had nine digs and 15 set assists. Stanley also had three ace serves.
“Losing to a team that earns it is easier to swallow then losing to yourself,” Peters said.
Allen County travels to Chanute Wednesday to take on Neosho County Community College in conference play.
