COFFEYVILLE – Proving they can finish on the road, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils need to do the same at home. Tonight, the Red Devils host NJCAA Division II 12th ranked Johnson County Community College.
The Red Devils racked up a 3-1 record at Coffeyville Community College’s Spikefest over the weekend. They return home after a 4-1 run on the road and are out to wipe out memories of several late conference losses at home.
Allen County moved past Independence 25-22, 25-22, 25-7 and beat host Coffeyville 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 on Friday at Spikefest. The Red Devils battled Neosho County in a four-set match that the Panthers won 28-26, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18.
“We knew Independence since we had just played them Wednesday in conference. We were able to focus on our side getting the start each time and gained serious momentum going into the Coffeyville match,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
Peters said the Red Devils (13-15) were able to stay on top through the three sets. She said Allen County did a good job of siding out when it needed to keeping Coffeyville from making any runs.
“We were ahead by at least six points on Neosho in each set but serve receive struggles allowed the Panthers to close the gap,” said Peters.
After the loss, the Red Devils regrouped to down Labette 25-14, 25-22, 25-15.
Alli Jenicke led ACCC’s net attack with 48 kills in the tournament, 14 of which came against Neosho County. Jenicke also had one solo block and two assisted blocks. Hayley Mertens ripped 37 kills and had two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
Jordyne Seichepine put up six solo blocks and had four assisted blocks plus delivered 33 kills. Makhala Giardina put down 21 kills and had four solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Randi Billings had five solo blocks and seven assisted blocks along with 10 kills at the net.
Nicole Reed came up with 71 defensive digs and Jenicke had 47 digs. Mertens came up with 36 digs.
Jacqui Ortiz was credited with 83 set assists and had 28 digs. Sabrina Stanley had 43 set assists and 24 digs.
Ortiz led the Red Devils at the service line with 10 aces and Stanley served up five aces. Mertens had four aces. Giardina and Reed each served up two aces. Billings and freshman Alisha Keith, who had 11 set assists, each had one service ace.
