Allen Community College’s volleyball team found success on the road, but had heartbreak at home last week.
The Red Devils traveled to Labette Thursday, where they swept past the hometown Cardinals in three sets.
Allen dominated in the sweep, winning 25-17, 25-9 and 25-13.
There was much to like in the match, with Macie Ediger and Ashlyn Aikins pounding home 12 and 10 kills, respectively, with each notching kill percentages above .400 on the night.
Laia Jaca had 27 assists and 11 digs. Mattie Dourgy led with 29 digs.
Allen’s .292 kill percentage was a far cry above Labette’s .017. The Cardinals mustered only 25 points combined through the three matches.
ALAS, success turned to heartbreak at home Saturday against Cowley County, who edged ACC 15-13 in the fifth-set tiebreaker to grab the win.
Allen won the opener, 25-19, before Labette responded with a 25-17 win in set two.
Allen went into overtime to win the third set, 27-25, needing just one win in the final two sets to bring home the win.
The Tigers wouldn’t cooperate, however, winning 25-23 in the fourth set, then the 15-13 tiebreaker.
Ediger and Aikins each had 11 kills, but the Red Devils’ successful kill rate fell to .132 for the match.
Jaca had 35 assists; Dougherty had 32 digs.
THE RED DEVILS have a few extra days to recoup.
Their match Monday at home against Highland was postponed. Allen is at Kansas City Kansas on Thursday and will be at Hesston next Monday for matches against Hesston and Kansas Weslyan’s junior varsity.
