Red Devils gain split at JCCC

OVERLAND PARK — Allen County Community College’s Red Devils broke an eight-game losing skid in Jayhawk Eastern Division play Tuesday. After losing the first three games of their four-game conference series at Johnson County Community College, the Red Devils took a 9-7 decision in the nine-inning game Tuesday.
The Red Devils and Cavaliers had played two games last Friday, then had to wait until Tuesday to finish the series because of inclement weather. Playing in cold temperatures, the Cavaliers won the first game 10-0 in five innings.
Cody Wren went the distance on the mound for ACCC, giving up 11 hits and four walks. He struck out two. Riley Price hit a single and a double for the Red Devils and Kyle Johnston had a single.
Allen County rallied in the second game after falling behind 3-1. The Red Devils scored a run in the first inning when Bryce Williams reached on a one-out error followed by singles from Curtiss Bunch and Michael Schell. That held up until the Cavaliers scored three runs in the fourth.
The Red Devils tied the game in the fifth inning. Miles Sanderson had his only hit of the game, leading off the frame with a double. Eric Seymour followed with a base hit and Price drove in a run with a single. With one out, Bunch picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-3.
Allen County took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. With Schell and Brad Alberts on base, Seymour doubled with two gone for two runs. Price’s single brought home Seymour.
The Red Devils added three more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a couple of Cavalier errors. Allen County was up 9-4 when Johnson County, ranked 17th in the NJCAA poll, scored three runs in the the eighth.
Brandon Spear and the Red Devils closed the door on the Cavaliers in the bottom of the ninth. Spear struck out one and Allen County retired the next batter on a dropped third-strike throw to first base. The third out came on a pop-up to first base.
Patrick Garner got the pitching win for ACCC, going five innings and giving up three runs on one hit, six walks and one hit batter. Garner struck out four. Zak Mickens pitched 21⁄3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits, one walk and one hit batter. Dylan Bowman allowed one run on two walks before Spear took over on the hill.
Price and Seymour each had two singles and a double and Schell hit three singles. Nick Fountain had two singles. Bryce Williams, Bunch and Nathan Russell each had a single.
Allen County is 9-17 on the season, 3-13 in the league. ACCC hosts Cowley County Saturday and Sunday in conference play.
