Red Devils fall to rival in five sets at home

The Allen Community College volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking home match to Independence Community College on Wednesday.
The loss marks the 10th for the Red Devils in their last 12 games.
Wednesday’s loss represented a missed opportunity for Allen to climb out of the basement of the Jayhawk Conference standings. Both teams entered the match winless with 0-4 conference records. With the loss, Allen drops to 0-5 in the conference and 4-11 overall. Independence improves to 1-4 in the conference and 2-16 overall.
Independence jumped on the Red Devils early with a 25-20 first-set victory and 25-21 second-set win.
With their backs against the wall, the Red Devils responded and won the third set 25-17.
Allen was even more dominant in the fourth set with a 25-14 victory to force a winner-take-all fifth set.
The Red Devils were unable to complete the comeback, however, and Independence won the fifth set 15-11 to escape Iola with the 3-2 victory and their first Jayhawk Conference win.
Red Devil sophomore Andi Dowell led the team with 24 kills and she only had six attack errors. Sydney Gish was the only other Red Devil to reach double-figures kills with 13.
Sami Cloe ran the Allen offense with 40 assists.
Joely Roe and Dowell each had 14 digs and Hannah Liggett added 10.
McKenzie Kueker led the team with two blocks.
Dowell and Cloe each had a pair of ace serves and Adanna York and Roe each had one.
