FORT SCOTT — It wasn’t what head coach Jessica Peters thought would happen or wanted to happen — a Jayhawk Eastern Division loss at Fort Scott Community College Wednesday.
Allen County Community College’s Red Devils looked liked they were going to do what their coach expected. The Red Devils won the first set 25-12 but lost the next three sets and the match.
Fort Scott’s Greyhounds posted their first conference win, 12-25, 25-13, 25-20, 27-25. The Greyhounds are 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the Jayhawk East.
So are the Red Devils but with a 6-9 overall mark.
“We’re struggling setting the ball right now. We can pass to target all day but if we cannot put a ball in a hitter’s alley then we are not going to be effective,” Peters said.
“Fort Scott deserved to win. They played every point as if it was the last. We played well the first set then we fell apart.”
Allen County has a week to work on its problems. The Red Devils host Highland Community College next Wednesday.
“Monday’s bye came at a good time. We just need to get in the gym and work on things,” Peters said. “This team has what it takes to succeed. The girls just need to believe in themselves.”
Nicole Rockhold led the Red Devils again at the net with 20 kills. She also had two solo blocks and one block assist.
Allison Jenicke put down seven kills and Andrea Miller had six kills plus one solo block and one assisted block.
Leesha Plagens had two kills and one solo block. Also at the net, Makhala Giardina had three kills and Erika Mack had one kill.
Mack was credited with 21 set assists. Casey Droddy had 11 assists.
Rockhold served up four aces and Morgan Scott had three ace serves. Droddy had two ace serves and Mack had one.
Defensively, Rockhold made 15 digs while Scott put up 13 digs. Jenicke had 12 digs and Mack had 10. Giardina had eight digs.
