OVERLAND PARK — Fatigue setting in is all Anwar Perry, Allen County Community College head coach, could attribute to the Red Devils’ lack of energy at the end of Saturday’s game.
The Red Devil men upset No. 10 Coffeyville Community College at home Thursday night, then went to take on Johnson County Community College’s Cavaliers Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers got past the Red Devils 65-61.
“I’m not making excuses but we were tired in the second half. We came out like we ended the Coffeyville game and had an eight-point lead at halftime,” Perry said. “We started the second half well then we stopped playing.”
Allen County led 39-31 at the break. Johnson County used a 34-22 scoring surge in the second half to win the Jayhawk Eastern Division game.
Perry said the Red Devils made a lot of unforced errors and the Cavaliers capitalized.
He said the Red Devils stopped penetrating and going to the basket, “instead we stood out and had a three-point shooting spree.”
The Red Devils went 2 of 21 from three-point range. Johnson County was 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. Allen County shot 44 percent, 27 of 61, from the field while Johnson County was 24 of 49, 49 percent. The Cavaliers hit 10 of 17 free throw attempts and the Red Devils were 5 of 10.
“They held Jason (Smith) to just three points in the second half. I just think we were tired. We’ll get back to work Monday,” Perry said.
Jason Smith finished with 20 points and had five rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Thomas Daniel tossed in 17 points and pulled down six rebounds. Terrell Shears added 12 points.
Johnson County (8-6, 18-7) was led by Ryan Arel with 19 points, as he hit four threes. Ryan Magdziariz hit three treys on his way to 14 points. Justin Leathers chipped in with 15 points.
Allen County is 3-11 in conference play and 6-19 overall. The Red Devils host Labette (0-11, 2-24) Wednesday, then have their final home game of the season Saturday with Cowley County coming into the ACCC gym. Both games tipoff at 8 p.m.
