PARSONS — Allen Community College’s Red Devils saw their season come to a halt Tuesday night. It came on a neutral softball field after two days of rain.
The Red Devils and Independence Community College Lady Pirates split two games Saturday sending the teams to a deciding third game in their playoff series.
The Lady Pirates hosted the NJCAA Region VI, Division II, District E series but Mother Nature had different plans for the decisive game.
The rain washed out the game Sunday and it was moved to Monday. Rain again postponed the contest with all the other teams in District E tournament ready for the tournament this weekend.
The Red Devils and Lady Pirates went to Parsons to play Tuesday evening on the Labette Community College field.
Independence defeated Allen 6-1, knocking the Red Devils out of the playoffs.
On Saturday, the Lady Pirates posted a 2-1 victory in nine innings as Allen’s Keelyn Bonar and ICC’s Alaina Stubblefield staged a pitching duel.
Stubblefield was back on the mound Tuesday to take the win for the Lady Pirates, holding the Red Devils to six hits.
Sophomore Alex Hill started for Allen and went three innings, giving up one run on six hits and one walk with one strikeout. Bonar, a freshman, pitched three innings and was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out two.
Paige Rothwell singled to open the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Erin Schwant. Bonar drove in Allen’s only run on a base hit. Independence scored the equalizer in the second then added two runs in the third and three more in the fifth inning.
Bonar had a single and a double. Rothwell, sophomore Ashley Ribelin, Kaylee Lucas and Taylor Easum each had a single.
After losing the first game on Saturday, Allen bounced back with an 8-2 victory with Hill pitching a complete game. Easum was 3-for-3 with three base hits to lead the Red Devil offense.
The Red Devils scored four runs in the second inning, wiping out a 1-0 Independence lead on a solo home run by Carley Conley in the first inning. Hill helped herself reaching on an error and scoring on a one-out triple by Maecy Charleston.
Easum’s single drove in a run and Rothwell had a base hit. With two gone, Bonar delivered a two-run single.
Hill scored again in the third after hitting a double. Easum’s two-out single plated the run. Two batters were out in the top of the fifth when Allen struck for two runs.
