HUTCHINSON — Allen Community College responded well to an early rally by host Hutchinson Community College Tuesday.
The Red Devils didn’t recover as smoothly following Hutch’s second and third outbursts.
The deep and talented Blue Dragon team took control late in the first half and never looked back to defeat ACC 90-64 in Allen’s first road game of the season.
The Red Devils (2-1) don’t have much time to fret about the loss, with home games Wednesday evening against OnPoint Academy, Friday against Cowley, Saturday against Southeast Nebraska and Monday against Friends JV.
Against Hutch, the Red Devils spotted the Blue Dragons an early 8-0 lead but rallied to cut the deficit to 11-10.
But Hutch’s withering pressure defense, and a 12-deep roster, proved too much to overcome. The Blue Dragons answered Allen’s response with a 16-0 run to take a 27-10 lead.
Allen never closed with 14 points after that.
Hutchinson converted 33 Allen turnovers into 45 second-chance points to expand the lead after intermission.
Allen’s Grayson Ryan came off the bench to score 18 points on 6 of 10 3-point shooting. E.J. Lewis added 12 and Dirk Johnson 10. Killian Spellman pulled down eight rebounds and had two blocks, while David Teele dished out five assists.
Five Blue Dragons scored in double figures, led by Kamryn Thomas and Kernan Bundy with 16 apiece.
