The Allen Red Devils snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over Southeast Community College Saturday.
After falling in the opener 5-1, the Red Devils rebounded with a 10-7 victory thanks in part to a three-RBI performance from sophomore second baseman Paxton Meyer.
With only sophomore outfielder Kennedy Mead driving in a run in the opener, the Red Devils struggled to plate runners in scoring position. Sophomore pitcher Camrynn Yardley took the loss, striking out five while walking four and allowing four earned runs. Sophomore shortstop Bailee Campbell and Mead each hit in 2 of 4 at-bats while sophomore first baseman Jena Hendrix hit in 2 of 3 at-bats.
After an unproductive opener, the Red Devils managed to manufacture more than a few runs in the finale. A second-inning Meyer solo-homer put Allen on the scoreboard, then an RBI groundout gave the Red Devils a 2-0 advantage. Southeast seemed to seize control after scoring six unanswered runs, but fought back with eight unanswered runs to rally back for the victory.
Meyer kickstarted the Red Devils with a two-RBI double, then freshman catcher Taryn Billings drove in Meyer with a blooper to center field — tying the game 6-6.
A bases-loaded walk allowed Allen to take the lead, then a Mead RBI groundout turned into an 8-6 lead. Southeast plated a runner in the seventh to put a scare in the Red Devils, but a two-out flyout to Yardley sealed the victory.
Following Saturday’s series, the Red Devils sit at 17-22 overall. They look to improve their 7-9 Jayhawk Conference record when they face Cowley County Community College Thursday, then host Johnson County Community College Saturday. First pitches for Thursday’s doubleheader are 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 and 3 p.m.
