The Red Devils, who move to 7-1 this season after the win, came into the season picked dead last in their conference but after a win like this and wins over conference foes Labette and Kansas City, Kansas, head coach Andy Shaws bunch just might be on to something.
Moberly jumped out early by grabbing some easy baskets around the rim. The Red Devils responded with a run and took the lead which they held for just a bit before the Greyhounds ended the half on a 5-0 run to tie things up at 43 at the break.
The second half had 11 lead changes and nine ties as both teams struggled to gain a foothold.
Sharp shooting from beyond the arc pushed Allen to a nine-point lead with under 10 minutes to play.
Threes continued to be key for keeping that lead down the stretch as the Red Devils hit on 10 of their 19 second half attempts to fend off a very talented Moberly team led by Alonzo Verge Jr., an Arizona State commit, who had 46 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists by the time it all was over.
Sophomore point guard Perry Carroll was one of three Red Devils to score 20-plus, leading the way with 25 points and four assists.
Sophomore Darius Love had 24 points and five rebounds and sophomore Wesley Anderson Jr. had a career night with 21 points, including going 9-9 from the free throw line and going 2-3 for threes.
Sophomore Jamaal Clifton was in the double-figures with 15 points and five assists and freshman Malik Hardmon had nine points and seven rebounds.
The win follows another close win in the Classic on Friday where Allen narrowly escaped tournament host State Fair with a 74-72 win.
Love had 20 points and five rebounds and Hardmon had 14 points and nine rebounds. Carroll had 11 and five assists and Anderson Jr., and CJ Parks each scored nine.
The Red Devil men and women will host Kansas City Kansas Community College starting at 6 p.m. with the womens game and the mens following after.
The men took down the Blue Devils last Thursday in Kansas City by 20 points, 84-64.
