COFFEYVILLE — The Allen Red Devils picked up their first Jayhawk Conference baseball win of the year after edging Coffeyville 12-11 in the opener to Saturday’s doubleheader.

A run in the eighth inning allowed the Red Devils to get the Game 1 win Saturday,  but they were on the wrong end of a 10-0 run-rule loss to wrap up the day.

With six runs in the fourth and five in the fifth, the Red Devils had to stay the course following an astounding 11-run Coffeyville fifth inning to hold on for their first conference victory.

A home run highlighted a four-RBI performance from freshman third baseman Martin Malick. Meanwhile, freshman shortstop Kaden Wint went three of four at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore second baseman Logan Martin and freshman first baseman Grayson Roberson each went two of three with an RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Manuel Toro worked four innings with three strikeouts, while freshman Jace Arnold picked up the victory while coming on in relief and throwing three shutout innings.

Allen’s luck ran out in game two, where only Arnold and Wint managed a hit in the 10-0 loss.

Freshman Jarrett Bell took the loss. He gave up five earned runs to three strikeouts while relievers Ryan Golden and Rogan Weir saw time while giving up a combined four earned runs with a strikeout each.

Following this weekend’s action, the Red Devils sit with a record of 5-14 and 1-7 in conference play.

The Red Devils open the week Thursday with a road-game doubleheader against Fort Scott (20-4, 2-2), then host the Greyhounds Saturday for a doubleheader in Iola.
