Red Devils defeat Monarchs

An error put Allen County Community College’s Red Devils on the path to victory in the first game of Thursday’s non-conference doubleheader at home.
Maple Woods Community College’s Monarchs made an error that allowed Ashley Randall to reach base. Melissa Davidson came in to run for Randall in the bottom of the sixth inning. Allen County was trailing 3-1.
It opened the door for the Red Devils with Maecy Charleston working for a walk. Lauren Poertner’s single drove in a run then Paige Rothwell delivered a two-run double to put ACCC up 4-3.
The Red Devils weren’t out of the woods yet. They had to work around their own fielding error in the top of the seventh and a walk issued by pitcher Keelyn Bonar.
Bonar got Maple Woods’ third batter to fly out. The next Monarch hitter reached on fielder’s choice and a pop-up recorded the third out. Allen County won 4-3.
The Red Devils won the second game 6-1. Sweeping the doubleheader pushed the Red Devils’ record to 8-1.
Allen County hosts the K-State Club softball team today at 1 o’clock for two games. On Sunday Marshalltown (Iowa) comes to Iola for two games starting at 1 p.m.
The Red Devils went to Overland Park Tuesday to open Jayhawk Eastern Division play with Johnson County Community College but weather won out. The teams had to suspend play in the fourth inning of the first game with Allen County down 4-0 because of lightning.
No makeup date has been set for the Johnson County games.
Allen County plays Neosho County Community College at home in Jayhawk East action Tuesday. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
On Thursday, Maple Woods and Allen County each scored a run in the first inning of the opening game. Poertner drove in the run with a base hit.
Maple Woods scored two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Trina Wehner. Allen County rallied for its three in the sixth to win.
Bonar was the winning pitcher for ACCC to go 5-0 on the season. She gave up five hits, walked four and struck out seven.
Poertner and Charleston each had two singles and Ashley Ribelin delivered a single and a double. Hitting a single each for ACCC were Alex Hill, Erin Schwant, Bonar and Randall.
The second game was tight also, with Allen County leading 2-1 until the sixth inning. The Red Devils plated four runs in the sixth.
Hill (3-1) pitched six innings and got the win. She allowed one run on three hits and two walks and struck out three. Audra Nelson pitched one inning, gave up a hit and struck out two.
In the second inning, Kayla Van Vliet singled and Jamee McEndree went in to run for Van Vliet. McEndree stole second base and scored on a throwing error.
That tied the game at 1-1. With one gone in the bottom of the third, Hill drew a walk and Schwant reached on a bunt single. Bonar’s base hit drove in the go-ahead run.
Schwant opened the sixth with a double and scored on Bonar’s triple. Van Vliet reached on a fielder’s choice. Charleston singled followed by an RBI double by Rothwell. With two gone, Ribelin doubled in two runs.
Bonar was 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a triple. Schwant had a single and a double. Rothwell and Ribelin each had a double while Hill, Van Vliet and Charleston each had a single.
